Why is Paris Called the City of Love?

Let us count the ways!

Paris began being seen as The City of Love way back in the Middle Ages when people of means went there to get married.

What Was So Special about Paris Back Then?

Paris was the largest city in Europe then with about 80,000 residents.  This doesn’t sound like a lot of people in today’s terms but those 80,000 people in Paris set the stage for Paris being the center of the cultural universe through wine, confections, the early stages of the uniqueness of French cooking, music, architecture, painting, and commerce.

The French language itself is considered by many to be the most mellifluous language.  It is a vowel-centered language as opposed to the consonant-centered languages that derive from German.

The rivers gave river and sea-faring merchants great wealth and power and they used a lot of this wealth and power to make Paris a destination for other people of wealth.  One reason wealthy people came to Paris was to get married and the idea of Paris as the quintessential city of romance has remained steadfast all these many centuries.

Glamma and Friends in Paris

It is not yet certain but Glamma would like to get together with a few friends she met while playing Fish Catch here at Jackpot Capital.  Fish Catch is a deep-sea fishing contest that challenges gamers’ skill at choosing the correct weapon to capture fish in the open sea.

Gamers can play internationally and Glamma has made friends with many people from all over the world this way!

When Glamma and friends get together, they like to play Banana Jones.  In Glamma’s eyes, Paris is the perfect place to play Banana Jones since his portly frame and cherubic cheeks plus his cute smile and high-pitched whoo hoos make him the most cuddly character at Jackpot Capital.

Megasaurus certainly is no match for Banana Jones!

Cuddly is the term that most befits Paris as well!

Glamma Loves the Intellectualism That Permeates the Air in Paris

While Glamma is not herself a great intellectual, she is very enamored (there is the connection to love, again!) by the idea of people devoting their lives to the pursuit of intellectual knowledge.

Paris has long attracted intellectuals.  Paris seems to make philosophers “sing” their thoughts more than any other city can do.

Here is a short list of famous intellectuals who were drawn to Paris and spent many years there as they became famous throughout the world:

  1. Gertrude Stein
  2. Jean-Jaques Rousseau. His “Social Contract” was a major influence of the burgeoning  liberalism of thought in the West.
  3. Marquis de Condorcet. In the 18th century, he wrote a treatise calling for the political emancipation of women.
  4. James Joyce.  It is said that Irish writers are the best writers but Joyce needed Paris to realize his potential as a writer.
  5. Ernest Hemingway. He ate beignets and drank coffee while hobnobbing with other intellectuals in Paris while he wrote about bullfighting and “The Old Man and the Sea”.
  6. Thomas Hobbes. His greatest philosophical question played a major part in the development of the philosophical system Robert Pirsig expanded on in “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance”.
  7. Michel Foucault.  He is the most modern of Paris intellectuals and a standard of 20th and 21srt century thought.
  8. James Baldwin.  He made Paris his home for 40 years when being gay and being black in the United States were points against anyone looking to influence society.
  9. Jaques Derrida. He founded the hyper-modern analytical tool called deconstruction which today dominates thought in academia.
  10. Nicolai Berdyaev and Lev Shestov.  They escaped newly communist Russia even as it was becoming the Soviet Union and spent years denouncing Marxism while living in Paris.
  11. Karl Marx.  He spent two years in Paris in the middle of the 19th century.  He wrote his most famous works in London.  Perhaps you have heard of him!

What Will Glamma Do in Paris?

Aside from spending time with whichever friends make their way to Paris next month and laughing rip-roaringly over Banana Jones’s exploits, there are a lot of things going on in Paris in February.

The Louvre and the Musee d’Orsay

Where else would any non-Parisian start a week in Paris?  The Louvre is the home of the best art works in the Western canon and the Musee d’Orsay is home to the best that the Impressionists had to offer.

Cruises on the Seine

There are a large number of dinner and champagne cruises on the Seine.  Glamma will choose one or two.  Daytime cruises have their appeal but the lights of the city from the Seine make nighttime cruises more romantic.  And February in Paris is all about the romance.

Walking Tours

Sitting on a yacht or other river boat is fine and well worth the time but once Glamma gets off the boat, she will want to walk.  Paris is one of the most walkable cities around!  Glamma will join a “free” walking tour and will give the tour guide a handsome tip, if he or she deserves it.

Food and Drink are Essential Aspects of Paris

Here are a few of the food and drink ways Glamma will spend her time in Paris:

  1. Chocolate tour.
  2. Wine tasting.
  3. French pastries.  MMMMM!  Maybe she’ll sample to croissants there and there and there!
  4. Cheese and cheese and did we mention cheese?  It is said that there are thousands of different kinds of cheese in France and they all eventually make their way to Paris.
  5. French bread.  The baguette has taken the world by storm and is called baguette in hundreds of languages.
  6. Food markets.  Glamma loves outdoor food markets from the suqs of the Arabic counties to the Amish market in Lancaster, Pennsylvania!
  7. The Champs-Elysees and the Arc de Triomphe.  The street is about two kilometers long which makes it walkable as often as Glamma decides to walk it.  The walk along the Champs-Elysees is infused with a sense of French, Western, European, and world history.

Glamma Will Have the Most Glamma-rous Time in Paris!

And with all of the walking and talking and wine sipping and chocolate melting and so on and so forth, Glamma will find some time to spin a few reels and have a Banana Jones adventure or two on her trusty mobile device!

Glamma says that one of the best decisions she ever made was to join Jackpot Capital!  You can follow in her footsteps even as she is following in the footsteps of so many important people who have made Paris home.
