Fun Just for Adults
There are dozens of great activities both indoor and outdoor that adults can participate in with just other adults. Cracking open a few bottles of wine is one such activity and you should certainly wait until the kids are asleep to do.
We will return to this theme soon—after the kids have gone to sleep. Until then, let’s think about the many activities that both adults and kids can enjoy together.
Fun for Adults and Kids Alike
One thing that kids love to do is play. So, it might be genuinely entertaining for the adults simply to take the kids to the playground. Every city and town has at least one super playground. Go spend some time at yours.
For the adults who no longer live in town, this might be a great way to bump into old friends—people you were friendly with in high school but have lost contact with over the years. Keep in mind that if they also no longer live in town, they may also be back home for the holiday and may also be taking the kids in their families to the playground.
Talking about old times while watching the kids run around, climb the ladder to the slide while squealing “again” every time is a great way to see the time fly. The kids won’t get tired for hours so fasten your virtual playground “seatbelt” and get ready for a super fun wild playground ride.
Take Everyone to an Amusement Park
Since we were talking about wild rides, we might offer an amusement park as great Thanksgiving adult entertainment that the kids will love as well. When was the last time you went to the old amusement park in town? Does it seem to have “shrunk” over the years? Get on a few of the rides that used to scare you a bit and discover just how benign they really are!
Remember to buy everyone some popcorn or cotton candy. Everyone can eat popcorn at home but cotton candy, you know, is really just an amusement park treat. So, don't mind the sugar rush, treat it as a seasonal treat!
Wheels
You might have had your own “wheels” when you were a kid. It would be a lot of fun to take the kids in the family to roll around on their own wheels. Many cities and towns have skateboard parks that are suitable for other kinds of wheels as well.
Even with all of the protective gear kids wear these days when they go wheeling, they will probably get a scratch or scrape somewhere. You can get a lot of joy commiserating with them after a spill on the kiddie spillway and they might even let you kiss that new booboo to make it feel better.
Don’t you feel better already?
Thanksgiving Day
The playground, amusement park, and skateboard park may be suitable as a morning activity on Thanksgiving Day or you might leave it for the long weekend. Other than these three activities, a lot of Thanksgiving adult entertainment activities revolve around the festive Thanksgiving meal. The adults can take over here but the older kids can certainly help out unless they suddenly get wedded to their screens. The smallest kids can help by folding napkins, taking naps, and otherwise staying busy out of the way of the adults.
Making a Game of Meal Preparation
It is always possible to take a mundane activity and turn it into a game. Someone might bring up on YouTube all of the biggest hits of the 1960’s. How many of them do you know? If you were born in the 1980’s or later, we would venture to guess that you know only the top say 50 songs from the 60’s.
It would be very entertaining indeed for grandma and grandpa to get into a hot rendition of Twist and Shout!
While people are cutting salad, preparing the turkey stuffing, mashing those poor potatoes, or putting together the pumpkin pie everyone could take turns regaling the others with tales and tall tales from their high school or even grammar school days. College pranks usually have to do with getting way too drunk, trying to roller blade down a handrail, trying to swing on a rope across a narrow river or otherwise falling flat on their faces!
Grammar school and high school stories are so much better. You might even come to realize that high school wasn’t all that bad after all - afterall, it did provide quite a few laughs!
Do You Remember When?
Since we have pressed the nostalgia button as a Thanksgiving adult entertainment theme, we could dredge up memories that most of us had but now forgotten that they were even memories.
Who was our first year chemistry teacher? What’s chemistry?!?
By the way, if there is a chemist in the group, you might set down a very important ground rule: no talking about chemistry!
Nostalgia trivia from a decade or more ago is a great way to pass the time as you prepare your gastric juices for the culinary onslaught to come.
The Grand Thanksgiving Day Parade
There will usually be one or more people who want to actually watch the floats roll by. Do kids on roller blades float by? As far as the parade is concerned, you can put it on as background noise: loud enough for the diehard parade raiders yet not so loud that everyone else can’t talk in a more or less normal voice!
You could assign one person to be the designated parade watcher to help the kids understand what all of the parade symbolism is about.
Nibbling
Mother and grandma will not be happy if people nibble themselves into not being hungry enough to eat lots of turkey, stuffing, pie, cranberry sauce, you name it. So set up an adult protocol called the little nibble.
The Meal
In San Francisco, they talk endlessly about The Catch. In Vancouver, they talk about The Shift. Chicago sports fans talk about The Long Suffering. But every family that celebrates Thanksgiving talks about The Meal.
First, the awesome Thanksgiving adult entertainment festival has to include loud oohs and aahs when grandpa or dad bring in the turkey. It might weigh them down but they will bring her in and then sonny or sonny-in-law will set out to carve the big bird.
It’s very important to tell the carver that he’s doing it all wrong even if he’s doing it all right! It’s very important to say again and again how good it smells, how delicious it looks, how it’s really a shame to carve it and ruin the awesome beauty before us!
We have to take some of everything on the table including the beets, the vegan delight, the tofu marvel, the green beans for a green planet parfait, and the salad. Salad is so important! As John Pinette said in his most brilliant moment, salad isn’t food. Salad is a promise that food will soon arrive - see YouTube.
After the Meal
Competition will be great for the sofa. The first settlers will try to take a full body length of sofa. It is okay to lift these sofa stuffers’ feet so more people can fit on the sofa. Every soft surface becomes an official moaning center.
Those few, perhaps one or none, who didn’t eat a third portion of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sauce, and pie might then bring out the dessert foods. There should be cold soothing drinks. This is when the kids will be entertained beyond their wildest dreams!
You see, kids have enough sense to stop eating when they aren’t hungry anymore! It would be a Thanksgiving first, and wildly entertaining, if the adults did the same but NOOOOO!
The Day after Thanksgiving
Try to wait until all the moaning has stopped. Then it’s time to head out to the mall - it's Black Friday!!! Walking from the parking space you find in the last row of the parking lot which rivals Disney World in size will be good for you.
Take the kids with you. Give them each some money to spend on “anything you want”. You will be entertained for sure when you see later on what the kids “wanted”.
The adults have to buy or shop for clothes they don’t need, they have to pretend to be starting their Christmas shopping, and they have to look at dozens of items on sale even if they don’t need these items, have one or more at home already, or don’t even know what some appliances actually do!
The most entertainment you’ll get at the mall on the day after Thanksgiving is watching all the other people who really are shopping, who really do care about what’s on sale, who say “would Grandpa like this for Christmas” even when they know full well that Grandpa won’t like it, will take it back, but will say that it’s the best Christmas present he ever received.
The kids won’t recognize any of these vital "after Thanksgiving" nuances but they will be truly interested in all of the colors the candy pieces come in.
Take a Walk around the Town
It may have been many years since you actually reacquainted yourself with your hometown. So, take a walk. You can go as a couple, as a group of friends, with or without the little ones.
If the kids are off playing with new toys or eating the candy you bought for them, then the adults can finally just kick back and have a real adult good time. Tall, cold beer or hot spiced tea goes well sitting on the porch. Or you can sit in the park if it isn’t too cold and just enjoy the outdoor air.
The adults will be tired by now. You might plan a quiet day for Saturday; perhaps a museum. Or you can plan to go out on the river, lake, ocean or neither if your town is completely landlocked. Still, a quiet gentle outdoor activity always seems to put people in a good mood.
You might save sack hopping or barrel racing for Sunday, as much as you would like to keep the kids entertained!
Giving Thanks
We admit that this long blog has been substantially tongue-in-cheek. It does however have many elements of genuine truth. Thanksgiving is a holiday of reconnecting. It is a holiday for young and old to share together. We do need to give thanks often for everything we have, for the many blessings we enjoy, and to be blessed to live in an age when we have to think about what we will do next to be entertained!
Happy Thanksgiving to one and all!
