Jackpot Capital gamers will be happy to hear that Glamma will enjoy many British traditions during her stay in London this month.  We will put up a video on YouTube and you will be able to see some of the highlights that Glamma will see and take part in this month.

There are also many British traditions that Glamma wants us to mention on the YouTube clip that will take place in other months, such as Guy Fawkes Day in November.

So, this article is a complement to our YouTube video which is a visual complement to Glamma’s April Adventures in London!

Who Was Guy Fawkes?

Guy Fawkes tried to overthrow the British government in 1605 but his revolution failed.  Now the British people “celebrate” Guy Fawkes Day (actually Night) every November.

Glamma doesn’t think that her adventures will take her back to Great Britain for Guy Fawkes Day this year but maybe next year!

Glamma Loves Afternoon Tea!

There is a slight confusion among visitors in which Afternoon Tea is confused with High Tea.  To make matters even sillier, Americans almost always call Afternoon Tea High Tea!

But Glamma is up on her British traditions and Afternoon Tea is a time-honored British tradition!  Afternoon Tea was “invented” by Anna, the Dutchess of Bedford, in the 1840’s.  She simply wanted some tea and a snack!

Glamma, Please Explain What Afternoon Tea Is

Hello everyone!  I am having a great time here in London.  I have Afternoon Tea almost every day!  By the way, traditional High Tea is simply supper here in Merry Old!

Afternoon Tea has three courses.  The first course consists of light sandwiches.  Cucumbers are a popular filler for these sandwiches.  The crust is often cut away from the bread to make the sandwiches even lighter.  Some other fillers for Afternoon Tea sandwiches can be beef or ham, a kind of chicken, and smoked fish fillets.

I prefer the cucumber sandwiches because I am not really hungry for a meal in the afternoon!  And I know that there will be scones and sweets to follow!

Scones are the next course.  I will eat one scone with butter.  Then they bring out the sweets and I sample enough sweets that I have to take a lengthy walk afterwards before supper!

After Afternoon Tea Walks

Glamma tells us that she has walked many miles in London working off those delicious Afternoon Tea sweets.  We asked Glamma what her favorite tea is.  She said that while she likes tea with a squeeze of lemon when she is home, or at least not in England, the British think that tea with lemon is an American abomination and they drink tea with milk or cream.

Glamma says, “My favorite tea is Earl Grey but not with milk!  Oh, no!  Talk about an affront to good taste!  So, at Afternoon Tea I like Ceylon tea with that splash of cream or milk and it is so good!

The Changing of the Guard

Tourists have a number of misconceptions about the Changing of the Gurad ceremony.  One misconception is that it is open to the public every day and a few times a day.  Actually, the public ceremony is held at very specific times.

Many tourists think that the Changing of the Guard is just a ceremony.  This is a big mistake.  The Guard protect the palace, the royal family, and all guests at the palace.  The Guard is a military unit with strictly military responsibilities.

Glamma looked over the schedule for the Changing of the guard and she has decided to attend the ceremony on Sunday April 7 at 11:00 AM.  Glamma chose this date for the music which will be provided by the Band of the grenadier Guards and the Pipes of the Number 12 Company Irish Guards.

Glamma Hopes to Experience the Royal Ascot One Day

This year the Royal Ascot pageant and horse race will begin on June 18 and culminate with the race on June 22.  During those five extraordinary days, there are events and all kinds of fun but alas this is not Glamma’s Royal Ascot year.  It will be the Royal Ascot Year for many thousands of others!  So, happy Royal Ascot celebration to all you lucky Londoners and tourists!

What WILL Glamma Do in London?

Aside from the Changing of the Guard and Afternoon Tea, there are innumerable things for Glamma to do in April!  Glamma wishes that she had even more time in London but her adventures in another city, state, country, or somewhere in the Universe await her next month and every month thereafter!

Easter in London

First of all, Glamma enjoyed Easter in London.  Easter was in the air in London throughout Easter weekend and Glamma was out and about having a great time!

British Library

The library will hold a festival from April 11-14 in which attendees will enjoy books, lectures about history and other subjects, performances and music.

Become a Horticulturist

Maybe not exactly but the Petersham Nurseries have workshops where people learn many things about plants and flowers.  One of the things Glamma is most excited about is a “seminar” of sorts on the fine art of bouquet arrangement!

Trafalgar Square

There is always something happening in Trafalgar Square.  A New Year celebration of the Sikh religion and community will take place at Trafalgar Square on April 14.  It’s called the Vaisakhi Festival so Glamma is sure that there will be loads of fun there!

Wicked

Glamma already has tickets to see the play Wicked which is a modern-day prequel to the Wizard of Oz story.  L. Frank Baum wrote the original Wizard of Oz for his kids.  After it was published, it was so popular that he wrote several sequels to the story.  But he never wrote a prequel!  Glamma is excited beyond imagining to see how Munchkin land was before Dorothy landed there!

Spring Flowers Everywhere!

Glamma will visit as many gardens as she can.  While North America is known for its Fall colors, London is known for its Spring colors: the many colors of the flowers that bloom in April!

Art, Art, Art

Glamma will visit London’s famous art museums.  Guided tours are available at the National Gallery but Glamma thinks that she can manage that museum on her own!  She has heard from friends and websites that it is best to experience the British Museum with a guide so Glamma will join a tour of the British Museum.

Day Trips

Glamma will go out of London a couple or three times.  England is so compact that it is possible to go far and still be near!  Glamma wants to see Stonehenge and the Cotswolds.  Glamma would also like to walk the streets of Liverpool which she knows have changed quite a bit since Paul, John, George, and Ringo walked the streets.
