There is a whole slew of superstitions. There are also a lot of superstitions that players believe when they are at a land-based casino. We will go over a few of them. At online casinos such as Jackpot Capital, there are really only two superstitions which we will talk about after we have dispensed with land-based casino superstitions.
Superstitions Do Not Make Any Sense
Even the common superstition to not walk under a ladder makes no sense. You can look up and see if there is anything that might fall on you if you walk under the ladder. In any case, if something is about to fall, it would more likely fall to one or the other side of the ladder.
In that case, walking under the ladder would be the safest place to walk. If you don't see that something might fall, you should simply take a very broad route around the danger.
By the way, we feel the same way about land-based casinos: we suggest that you take a wide berth around the casino and play the more than 400 games we offer here at Jackpot Capital!
Why is the Front Door Considered Lucky or Unlucky?
We have no idea!
Some land-based casino players never enter through the front door, while others always enter through the front door! The front door cannot be all things for all people. Naturally, our solution to this conundrum is to avoid land-based casinos altogether, thereby eliminating the front door superstition!
Where Are the Luckiest Slots?
There has long been a superstition that the luckiest slots are in a corner away from most of the players. The reverse of this superstition is that the first slots you see are the least lucky.
Both of these ideas are faulty. The fact is that all slots at land-based casinos have a much lower return to player rate of 90% or less than the common 97% at Jackpot Capital online casino.
In addition, and away from superstitions for a bit, land-based casinos have to take out terminals to make room for new game terminals. At Jackpot Capital, we never take out a slot to make room for the new slot. We have tons of space here in cyberspace.
As a result, you might find a slot that is an old-fashioned classic of sorts that not more than a handful of players play over the course of a year. But we keep it so that those few players can play it!
When Did Books Get Unlucky?
Who knows?
A good number of players at land-based casinos think that reading a book is unlucky. The reason might be that reading takes away their concentration and attention and leads to horrible mistakes like hitting in blackjack with 19 points against the dealer’s 16.
Some people say that the Chinese word for book sounds like the English word “lose”. There must be a lot of words that do not cross language borders easily!
Other than that, reading is no less lucky than sleeping at the table, daydreaming, thinking about when the Cubs might win the World Series again, and similar thoughts.
Lucky Charms and Blowing on the Dice
These superstitions range from gross (blowing on the dice) to just nonsensical. If you ever think about doing either of these things, you might consider leaving the casino and finding another way to have fun!
Whooping and Hollering
Players at the craps and roulette table make loud whooping and hollering noises when the player throws the dice or the croupier spins the wheel. All the whooping and hollering will not affect the outcome of the throw or spin!
This is the land-based casino variation of the sports fan screaming at the television screen, telling the player, usually the quarterback, what to do. Then, the quarterback often messes up, and the screaming fan tells him where to go.
Whooping and Hollering Have an Online Casino Counterpart
Whooping and hollering are a good segue for the one primary superstition of online casino gamers. This is the gambler’s fallacy. As much as we have had our proverbial tongue in cheek here, this is a truly serious superstition that we must warn you about.
The gambler’s fallacy simply states that an occurrence that has not happened in a while is “due” to happen. This is a fallacy in every sense of the term. At both online casinos and land-based casinos, the gambler’s fallacy gets a lot of superstitious players into financial trouble.
Every game at Jackpot Capital and every game played at a terminal at a land-based casino is run by the random number generator. This is software that seemingly chooses cards or numbers entirely at random. At land-based casinos, the terminals are usually for slots and video poker, although there may be other games that operate with a random number generator.
All games at online casinos are operated through a random number generator. The RNG, as it is often called, has no memory of what has gone before. That means that every hand or spin is ENTIRELY random!
Some people use a variation of the gambler’s fallacy to pick winners in sports betting or in the stock market. The gambler’s fallacy is a true problem for some players. It is the main reason we have said in the past that online casino play should take gambling and turn it into gaming!
Betting Systems are a Form of Gambler’s Fallacy
A betting system will tell players to follow it, and they will win money “for sure”. This is an offshoot of the gambler’s fallacy that also guarantees wins.
A betting system usually involves changing your bet after either a loss or a win. The main reason betting systems do not work is that they don’t take losing streaks into account. An obvious observation is that if a betting system did actually work, it would quickly bankrupt every casino!
The most common and most popular betting system is the Martingale System. In this system, you double your bet after a loss. It is designed to work on even money bets.
Are There Any Even Money Bets at a Casino?
First of all, there are no truly even-money bets at a casino. The common bets that are said to be even money bets are in roulette. These are the even-odd, red-black, and first 18 numbers-second 18 numbers. These bets do not take the 0 and 00 into account. So, they are not even money bets.
Now, let’s see why just a short losing streak makes the Martingale System so wrong.
First bet: $5 bet loses.
Second bet: $10 bet loses.
Third bet: $20 bet loses.
Now, look at two simple facts. If the third bet had won, the player would have won $20 on that bet but would have lost $15 on the two previous bets. So, the Martingale System is designed to win back your original bet, in this case $5.
But the bet lost. Now you have to bet $40 in order to win back $5! That is why this system is not a good system to follow; you run out of money, or you are compelled to make a bet that is entirely foolhardy just to win back your original bet.
Even when Secretariat was an overwhelming favorite to win the Belmont Stakes, a bet on him to win was a better bet than a bet in the Martingale System after three losses in a row.
