An Inordinary Desert of Burning
Burning Man was first held in 1986, on Baker Beach in San Francisco. It’s hard to imagine that the Burning Man we know today actually began as a bonfire ritual attended by a small group of friends - we know - but it has! During that summer of 86’, Larry Harvey, one of the festival’s founders, and a couple of his friends built an 8-feet-tall wooden statue of a man. It wasn’t until 1991 that the project moved to Nevada’s Black Rock desert, where an estimate of 250 people showed up for Burning Man’s first year outside California.
