Singapore Botanic Garden
This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site! As such, it is a lot more than just plants! The garden covers about 20 acres and features many plants that are unique to the tropical climate of Singapore.
One thing that stands out in the Singapore Botanic Garden is that there is no real winter there so flowering plants flower all year round. Plants don’t hibernate for the winter!
Sentosa
This is an island off the coast of the main part of Singapore. There are easy and less easy ways to get there and Glamma is determined to walk there as there is a well-maintained pedestrian walkway to get to Sentosa.
Sentosa is a quiet place with beaches, shops, pubs, and tea houses. There is an observation deck and, in clear weather, people say that they can see as far away as Indonesia! To add to the excitement, there is even a rickety suspension bridge that connects Sentosa to another island.
In fact, this is Singapore so the suspension bridge is not rickety at all!
Sungei Buloh Wetlands Reserve
This is a stopping-off point for birds migrating north or south. As Glamma will be there in October, she is perfectly situated to see thousands upon thousands of birds that land at the reserve to rest, eat, drink, and refuel as they continue heading south.

Although there are no classical concerts scheduled for the time that Glamma will be in Singapore, the music scene is still full of exciting offers and surprises. Glamma will attend several concerts in October and she will let us all know how they turned out.
Who Are the Nine Emperor Gods?
Eastern religions are murky to Westerners. The nine emperor gods originated as a kind of worship of the Big Dipper constellation since the ancients discovered that it could help them navigate the seas and calculate the calendar.
People from the South China Sea region were seafaring people from ancient times and needed a heavenly guide to steer them correctly. As people worship what helps them stay on course, the ancients began to worship the Big Dipper.
This star worship developed over long stretches of time into the seven emperor gods. The old emperors didn’t see themselves as gods. Rather they saw themselves as regular people who had been chosen or signaled by the heavens to rule.
In a sense, this is like the Western notion of the Divine Rights of Kings.

The festival lasts nine days. The temples that are devoted to the emperor gods are thoroughly and meticulously cleansed. This it the beginning of the purification celebration in which petitioners ask for blessings and other benefits from the gods.
For tourists, the festival is a nine-day event featuring chants, colorful traditional clothing, ritualistic dance, and many other aspects of an ancient religious event that has evolved into a more modern festival albeit retaining much of the older religious symbols and activities.
