Is Australia a Big Country?

Australia is a gigantic country.  It is also an island, so big that it would take days to cross it, and a continent!  So, Glamma has planned a lot of adventures into her month at the land down under.

Glamma said that she finds it interesting that Australia is called the land down under and no Northern Hemisphere country is called the land up over.  Well, that’s Glamma for you!

How Do Australians Say…?

Glamma has started to learn Australian slang and just od everydaty words and terms.  Here is a list Glamma gave us of the terms she has learned so far:

  1. Cake hole.  This is the same as pie hole in North America.
  2. Ankle biter.  This is the equivalent of rug rat in the land up over.
  3. Bikkie, Barbie, and Brekkie.  These are biscuit aka cookie; bar-be-cue; and breakfast.  Glamma wonders: if a bikkie is bad is it an ikkie bikkie?
  4. Mate means friend.  Where Glamma comes from a mate is a partner, especially a sleeping partner.  In Australia, you might have a thousand mates!
  5. Bloke means man.  Glamma is not sure that she will be able to use this term at all but she is happy to know it.
  6. Sheila is a woman.
  7. Footy is Australian football.  Glamma is planning to go to a footy match, er, game even though she doesn’t know any of the rules.
  8. All of the words in Waltzing Matilda such as tucker, billabong, and billy.
  9. Outback is the huge desert interior that occupies at least 90% of the Austarlian land area.
  10. Walkabout is a trek in the Outback.

Glamma is Planning a Walkabout

There are still some Aussies (slang for citizens of the nation-state of Australia) who can do a walkabout over weeks by themselves delving deep into the Outback.  Glamma will take an organized hike in the Outback that will take several hours with overnight camping and singing by the billabong even if there isn’t a billabong to sit near!

In a walkabout, at the campfire, someone form the tour staff will play Waltzing Matilda.  Now, everyone knows the most famous line of the song but the rest of the song has tons of Aussie slang.  Here are the lyrics with the words no one outside of Australia knows.

Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong
Under the shade of a coolabah tree
And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled
"You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me"

Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me
And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled
"You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me"

Down came a jumbuck to drink at the billabong
Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee
And he sang as he stowed that jumbuck in his tucker bag
"You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me"

Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
"You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me"
And he sang as he stowed that jumbuck in his tucker bag
"You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me"

Up rode the squatter, mounted on his thoroughbred
Up rode the troopers, one, two, three
With that jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag
You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me

Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me
With that jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag
You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me

Up jumped the swagman and sprang into the billabong
"You'll never take me alive, " said he
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong
You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me

Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong
You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me

Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong
You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me

The Sydney Opera House

Glamma has long hoped to see an opera in the famed Sydney Opera House.  She already has her tickets.  Glamma has long felt that a first row seat in the balcony is better than a seat in a far back row on the main floor.

Wine, Wine, and More Wine

Believe it or not, the country that gives us the bikkie also gives us excellent wine.  Since the wineries are all close to the cities, Glamma will find plenty of time to tour a winery and sample the wares.  She even expects to buy a few bo’lles!

Beaches

It may be autumn in Australia but that doesn’t mean that it will be too cold to hand out at the beach.  Glamma is an adventurer and Australia has hundreds of miles of beach!  This sounds like a mating call.

Motorcycling

Glamma has been to many places ibn her whirlwind tours this past year where she couldn’t travel internally by motorsickle.  Australia has lots of good roads and wide open spaces and Glamma loves nothing better than good roads, wide open spaces, and a good cycle.
